Colorado Advanced Photonics Technology Center

Photonics and General Development Lab

The Photonics and General Development Lab consists of several type of equipment. The Telecommunications suite is designed to evaluate photonic components in a system level test environment up to the 12.5 GHz which will accommodate the OC/192 standard. The suite will provide a nearly complete test capability including system level eye diagrams and bit error rate testing. Examples of the telecommunications equipment include: following: tunable laser , polarization controller and analyzer, 10GHz transmitter and receiver, optical spectrum analyzer (OSA), RIN test system, EDFA, ASE source. CAPT also has a programmable SEIKO fiber optic polisher, a FSM-30PF Fujikura fusion splicer and a Wyko fiber optic connector interferometer system for optical fiber connector fabrication.

In addition, CAPT has a variety of photonic bench top equipment used to support general measurement and development. These include optical tables and isolators, hardware mounts, 500 Mhz Sampling oscilloscopes, 0-22Ghz spectrum analysis capability along with 100Khz dual channel lock-in amplifiers. There is also an electronics soldering station, as well as general instrumentation like power supplies, function generators, pulse generators, amplifiers, resistance and capacitance meters, multimeters, etc…

The optics and photonics lab has 5 air isolated optical benches with several cabinets full of mounting fixtures, manual and motorized mechanical stages, lenses and other typical optics hardware. The general equipment also includes a variety of lasers, power meters, beam intensity profilers and diode laser drives with thermo-electric cooler controllers.

The major equipment items include the following:
