CAPT 3550: Fiber Optics Handling and Processing Instructor: Judy McFadden Course
Description This
two-day course is an introduction to fiber optics handling and
processes that is intended for technicians and assembly personnel. The emphasis of the class is 75 % instruction in a
laboratory. It will
teach the terminology associated with optical fiber, optical fiber
cables and connectors, and instruction for terminating cable with
FC/PC and FC/APC connectors and fusion splicing.
The classroom instruction introduces the student to fiber optic
handling and what causes optical fibers to break.
The “hands on” optical fiber preparation will have an
emphasis on handling issues that will help prevent breakage of the
optical fiber due to handling. The student will learn how to remove the layers of an
optical fiber cable and how to prepare the optical fiber for
termination with FC/PC and FC/APC connectors and prepare optical fiber
for fusion splicing. We
will be teaching three methods of buffer removal with ‘Miller’
type buffer strippers and ‘No-nicks’, plus hot jacket strippers
used for the fusion splicing process. The class size is limited to 6
attendees. Who
Should Attend This
course is intended for the technicians, assembly line workers, and
engineers who prepare fiber for connectors, splices and other optical
assemblies. About
the Instructor
Judy
McFadden is currently a Staff Engineer at the CAPT Center.
She has worked in the Colorado Photonics industry since
1980. She has worked in photonic and materials research
development laboratories and manufacturing environments for aerospace
and commercial applications. Her
work at Lockheed Martin included reliability issues associated with
fiber optics and connectors for space borne applications.
Specifically, she has been involved with fiber optics and
related technology for over 15 years.
Judy is a graduate of Denver University in Physics; she came to
CAPT in 2001 after 15 years with Lockheed Martin Astronautics. REGISTER NOW CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED!!! Contact Demetria Acker @ 303 365-8409 or Fax 303 365-8411, Register on the web at URL: www.captcenter.org
