CAPT 1020: Handling, Cleaning
& Inspecting Optics Course Description This 4 hour offers an overview of the basic "do's, don'ts and how "to's" involved in working with optical components such as lenses, mirrors, and optical flats with optical coatings. Handling connectorized fibers will also be covered. Practical knowledge and skills in handling, cleaning and inspection will be emphasized. Attendee's will learn how to handle and store optics without damaging them or contaminating their surfaces. An introduction to various optical mounting techniques will be introduced. There will also be "HANDS ON" exposure in how to inspect surfaces for scratch/dig per MIL-C-1897A and MIL-O-13830A, and how to recognize contamination. Other optical and non-optical inspection technologies will be introduced. Proper surface cleaning will be taught through "HANDS ON" learning, along with a review of available solvents for optics cleaning. The instructor will review which solvent to employ in which circumstance. This course is available as an on site presentation subject to minimum attendance requirements. Who Should Attend This course is intended for laser and optic assemblers, technicians and their supervisors who are required to inspect, assemble and align optics as part of their normal work tasks. About the
Instructor Judy McFadden is currently a Staff Engineer at the CAPT Center. She has worked in the Colorado Photonics industry since 1980. She has worked in photonic and materials research development laboratories and manufacturing environments for aerospace and commercial applications. Her work at Lockheed Martin included reliability issues associated with fiber optics and connectors for space borne applications. Specifically, she has been involved with fiber optics and related technology for over 15 years. Judy is a graduate of Denver University in Physics; she came to CAPT in 2001 after 15 years with Lockheed Martin Astronautics.
