CAPT
1010: Understanding Lasers
Tom
Mahony, Instructor
Course Description
This course is largely
derived from the course of the same name that has been
taught by Breck Hitz, Executive Director of the Laser and
Electro-Optics Manufacturers Association (LEOMA). This
course teaches the fundamentals of what a laser is, what
it can and can not do and the kind of lasers that are
available for different applications. Basic concepts of
optics, diffraction and gaussian beams are required to
understand the underlying principles of a laser are also
discussed.
Throughout the course,
material is presented in an intuitive, mostly
non-mathematical manner. The use of mathematics is
limited to first year algebra.
Who Should Attend
This course is
targeted at non-photonic technicians, engineers and sales
and customer service personnel who need to better
understand the language of lasers and the conceptual
principles behind the operation of a laser. Personnel who
are being cross-trained into the photonic industry will
find this course highly beneficial.
About the
Instructor
Tom Mahony has been
active in Photonics and Photonics business for nearly 30
years. He was a senior member of the technical staff at
Hughes Aircraft working on space borne infrared
surveillance systems for 10 years. Subsequently, he
worked in a similar capacity at Ball Aerospace in the
early 1980's as the Technical Director of the Optical
Airborne Measurements Program. In 1984, he co-founded
Boulder Electro-Optics, which was acquired by Melles
Griot in 1986 and which now operates as the Melles Griot
Electro-Optics Division. He was a Vice President of
Melles Griot and General Manager of the Electro-Optics
Division. Tom currently serves as the Executive Director

"Understanding Laser Technology" by Breck Hitz,
which is temporarily out of print. However, material
derived from that book will be provided.
